Born in 1988, Bryen Warfield is an exciting young conductor based in Indianapolis, IN. He has conducted various orchestras and bands across the United States and Canada, including the Windsor Symphony Orchestra (C.A.), Yakima Symphony Orchestra (W.A.), Philharmonic Orchestra of Indianapolis (IN), Fort Wayne Philharmonic Players Association (IN), Circle City Orchestra (IN), and the Old Crown Brass Band (IN). Bryen focuses on African American classical music, performing works by composers such as Margaret Bonds, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, Florence Price, William Grant Still, Omar Thomas, Henry Dorn, and Benjamin Horne, along with many other pieces by underrepresented artists.
Bryen Warfield's passionate commitment to music education and its vital role in nurturing the whole child is remarkable. He has played a key role in successfully managing band and orchestral programs across Indiana, including at Whiteland Community H.S., Homestead H.S., and Shortridge H.S. His significant contributions have earned many of his ensembles recognition at local, state, and national levels. Notably, during his tenure at Homestead High School, the Symphony Orchestra performed as a featured group at the 2020 Indiana Music Educators Association Professional Development Conference, highlighting his influence. The Homestead Wind Ensemble, under his direction, became part of the consortium for Brian Balmage's "Love and Light," Timothy Mahr's "Urgent Voices," and Parker Long's "Symphony No. 1." Additionally, through his guidance, the Homestead Symphony Orchestra and Wind Ensembles were invited to perform at the 2023 Music for All National Concert Festival. Bryen's dedicated career in the pageantry arts as an adjudicator, educator, and clinician for high schools, colleges, and drum corps across the nation underscores his steadfast dedication. He serves as the Brass Co-Caption Head for the Sacramento Mandarins Drum and Bugle Corps and previously worked with the brass teams at the Bluecoats, Santa Clara Vanguard, Columbus Saints, and Cincinnati Tradition.
Bryen's academic journey exemplifies his eagerness to learn and his dedication to his art. He is currently pursuing a Doctor of Arts in Orchestral Conducting under Professor Greg Robbins, with a secondary focus on Wind Band Conducting alongside Dr. Thomas Caneva. He obtained his Bachelor of Music in Tuba Performance from the University of Louisville, studying with respected professors such as John Jones, Darryl Johnson, and Kimcherie Lloyd. He then advanced his expertise by completing a Master of Music in Wind Conducting at Ohio State University, where he was guided by Dr. Russel Mikkelson and Dr. Scott A. Jones. Additionally, Bryen has had the opportunity to conduct master classes with prestigious educators, including Esa-Pekka Salonen, Hugh Wolff, Donald Thulean, Kevin Sedatole, Kevin Noe, John Lynch, Robert Franz, Jerry Junkin, and Robert Ambrose.
